Project Information

Aboriginal cultural heritage is a living heritage and includes both objects and sites of significance to First Nations people, as well as the stories, knowledge, and practices that continue connection to Country. The Cessnock Local Government Area is within the traditional lands of the Wonnarua, Awabakal, and Darkinjung peoples and includes significant cultural heritage throughout the landscape.

The conservation, recognition, and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage has been a long-term objective of Council. Working closely with members of the Aboriginal community, Council has developed and adopted an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan at its December meeting on 11 December 2024.

The Plan outlines the current NSW legislative framework for the assessment and protection of cultural heritage and provides a table of actions demonstrating Council’s commitment to enhancing the assessment and conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage. The Plan also assists landowners and development applicants in understanding their obligations regarding the management of Aboriginal objects and places.

Funding

The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan was co-funded by Council and the NSW State Government through the Community Heritage Grants program.
