Project Information

Aboriginal cultural heritage is a living heritage and includes both objects and sites of significance to First Nations people, but also the stories, knowledge and practices that continue connection to Country. Cessnock Local Government Area is within the traditional lands of the Wonnarua, Awabakal and Darkinjung peoples and includes significant cultural heritage throughout the landscape.

The conservation, recognition and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage has been a long-term objective of Council and we have worked with members of the Aboriginal community to develop an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan.

The Plan outlines the current NSW legislative framework for assessment and protection of cultural heritage and provides a table of actions outlining Council’s commitment to enhancing assessment and conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage. The Plan also assists landowners and development applicants in understanding their obligations regarding management of Aboriginal objects and places.

Council is seeking feedback on the draft Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan and welcomes input from across the community.

Funding

The draft Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan is co-funded by Council and the NSW State Government through the Community Heritage Grants program.

How to make a submission

Should you intend to make a submission on the plan in writing you may do so by 5pm on Thursday, 21 November 2024. Please quote “Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan ". Submissions should be addressed to The General Manager and can be submitted via:
