Project Overview

Council has secured funding from the NSW Government to deliver an upgrade to Branxton Town Centre, spanning from Church Street/Paterson Lane to the Anvil Creek Bridge.

This revitalisation project is designed to enhance the village character of the area by narrowing the former highway corridor, improving the pedestrian experience, optimising parking and introducing landscaping to create a more welcoming and attractive environment.

Since the opening of the Hunter Expressway in 2014, and the growth of nearby Huntlee, Branxton has emerged as a vibrant village and a key heritage destination in the Hunter Valley. To support this transformation, Council is delivering important upgrades to ensure the town centre keeps pace with the region’s growth while preserving its rich character and charm between the areas of Church Street/Paterson Lane and Anvil Creek Bridge.

Project Background

The funding secured for this project has a requirement that it must be used by Early 2026. This funding is specifically allocated for improvements to the section of Branxton between Church Street/Paterson Lane and the Anvil Creek Bridge.

We understand this project has a quick turnaround. We appreciate this project has been a long time in the making and while we are restricted with timing and the scope of the project, we would like to work together with our community for some of the design elements like trees and planter boxes.

The project design has undergone several revisions to ensure the final plan delivers the most functional and aesthetically pleasing outcome in order to connect to future stages, and balance the need for infrastructure improvement with the goal of enhancing the area's visual appeal.

The foundation for this work was established through the Branxton Masterplan, which was publicly exhibited in 2019 for community feedback. While funding does not currently exist to provide upgrades to additional areas of Branxton, as noted in the Masterplan, Council is committed to continue investigating funding options and possibilities in the future.

Upgrade Inclusions, Decisions and Benefits

The Branxton Town Centre Project - Church Street/Paterson Lane to Anvil Creek Bridge upgrade includes:

• New, accessible footpaths

• Rationalised parking arrangements

• Improved drainage infrastructure

• A pedestrian crossing with raised safety platforms

• Tree planting and landscaping enhancements

These improvements will make the town centre safer, greener, and more connected for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

The design decisions for the Branxton Town Centre upgrade are driven by a commitment to creating a safer, more accessible pedestrian environment. A key focus of the project is to reduce the width of the former highway, encouraging slower vehicle speeds and improving walkability through the town centre. Environmental impacts have been considered throughout the planning process, with measures in place to minimise disruption and protect local ecosystems. The upgrade is designed to enhance the condition and longevity of public infrastructure, ensuring it continues to serve the community effectively for many years to come.

The upgrade will bring a range of benefits to the local economy and business community. It will support the diversification of tourism and enhance the visitor experience by improving way-finding and increasing the overall appeal of the area. As Maitland Street transitions into a slower-speed environment, the focus will shift toward pedestrian safety and comfort, encouraging foot traffic and more vibrant street activity. The project will also beautify public spaces with landscaping, trees, and seating where possible, while rationalising parking to make better use of existing road space and designated car parks.

What to Expect During Construction

Construction is expected to start within the next 2 months (September/October 2025).

While the project is underway, some short-term inconvenience is expected:

• Temporary traffic changes and reduced access in some areas

• Construction noise and activity in designated work zones

• Work will be communicated with 7-days' notice
